Tail Trails

Finalist - Travel Photographer of the Year. December 2019.

One Shot: Oceans, Seas, Rivers, Lakes Category

Glassfish swirl around a hollow indentation along the walls of a sea pinnacle, trying to avoid becoming a tasty morsel when bigger fish are on the hunt. The pinnacle’s coral-enriched walls are a magnet for underwater life. Their nooks and crannies provide shelter for juvenile fish, an anchoring point for all sorts of invertebrate life and a place to call home in the vastness of the ocean.

I wanted to capture the perpetual motion of these little fish. They’re always on the move, bunching up tight when they feel threatened and casually dispersing when the coast is clear. They have a delicate translucency that reflects the colours of the water and surrounding environment.

This was shot using rear-curtain sync to enhance the tail trails of life on the move.
